Cars and Trucks with the Most Personal Injury Claims

Posted on

Baltimore Car Accident Lawyers provide a list of the vehicles that report the most personal injury claims. From multiple airbags to accident avoidance systems, car manufacturers offer a wide range of advanced safety systems that help drivers avoid car accidents. Unfortunately, there are still many older vehicles on the road that do not have these safety features. In addition, other factors like inclement weather, mechanical issues, and driver error continue to cause accidents. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), certain cars and trucks fail to protect the occupants.

HLDI compiled data on vehicles from model years 2014 to 2016, and they discovered that the frequency of medical claims reflected the widely accepted assumption that smaller cars provide less protection in a collision compared to larger, heavier vehicles. Small, four-door micro cars had the highest claim frequency, followed by minicars, small four-door cars, then mid-size sedans. Very large pickup trucks had the lowest frequency of claims followed by large luxury SUVs.

HLDI found that the models with the highest frequency of claims tended to be smaller, more affordable models that were chosen either by or for young drivers. Smaller, more expensive sports cars, including the Porsche 911, the Chevrolet Z06, the Porsche Boxster, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon, and the Mercedes-Benz SL took seven of the top 10 spots for fewest personal injury claims. This is likely because there is only space for up to two passengers and they are not used for long trips.

Top 10 Vehicles with the Most Personal Injury Claims

  1. Mitsubishi Lancer
  2. Toyota Yaris iA/Scion iA
  3. Nissan Versa
  4. Kia Rio Sedan
  5. Chevrolet Sonic
  6. Kia Forte
  7. Chrysler 200
  8. Toyota Corolla iM/Scion iM
  9. Dodge Charger
  10. Kia Rio Hatchback

According to the data, the severity of the claims often increased as the vehicle size increased, although this was not true across the board. HLDI suggested that this may be because there are often multiple passengers in larger vehicles, which would result in additional injuries. Regardless of the size of the vehicle or the advanced safety features that it comes equipped with, car accidents can happen when you least expect it. As a consumer, it pays to do your research and find out which cars have the best safety ratings, and which ones you should avoid.
