Baltimore Car Accident Lawyers

Uninsured and Underinsured Accidents in Maryland

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage enables injured victims to recover damages after an accident that was caused by driver who did not have insurance or did not have enough coverage. Many drivers only purchase the minimum coverage required by law. This is often not enough to cover the cost of injuries sustained in serious car accidents.

Baltimore car accident lawyers at LeViness, Tolzman & Hamilton, P.A. have been helping injured victims throughout Maryland for more than 30 years, and we have recovered more than $250 million on behalf of our clients. We have successfully resolved many tough cases, including hit-and-run accidents and uninsured and underinsured accidents. Our attorneys will carefully review the details of your accident and advise you of your best course of legal action based on your unique situation.

Minimum Liability Coverage

Maryland law states that all registered vehicle owners must purchase minimum liability coverage, which includes:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury per person per accident
  • $60,000 for bodily injury for all people injured per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Vehicle owners in Maryland must also carry at least $2,500 in personal injury protection (PIP.) This type of insurance reimburses policy holders for medical expenses and lost wages. Injured policy holders are eligible for PIP even if they were at fault for the accident.

Uninsured Motorist

Maryland law also requires all policy holders to carry uninsured motorist (UM) insurance. Minimum UM coverage is:

  • $30,000 for your bodily injury in each accident
  • $60,000 total for bodily injury to all occupants in each accident
  • $15,000 for property damage to your automobile

UM coverage applies to hit and rum situations if the fleeing driver is never identified and accidents in which the other driver carries no insurance.

Underinsured Motorist

In the event that property damage and injury damages exceed the coverage carried by the at-fault driver, your UM coverage policy contains an underinsured motorist (UIM) clause to compensate for the amount not covered by the other driver’s insurance plan.
