Baltimore Car Accident Lawyers: Congress Seeks Changes to Deadly Car Seat Backs

Posted on

Losing a child is a parent’s worst nightmare, but it happens every day due to car accidents and defective car seats which fail to keep children safe. As a result, Congress has stepped in, demanding that car manufacturers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration take action and fix the seat backs.

Senators E. Markey and Richard Blumenthal sent letters to 19 different manufacturers, insisting that they provide information about the seat back failures that have caused fatal wrecks. Between the auto-makers that manufacture the cars and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that is responsible for regulating the automakers, both have failed to address and fix this problem, said Markey. For years, they have been aware of this problem, one that would cost very little to fix, yet allegedly have made no attempt to do anything about it.

Unfortunately, the federal standard for seat strength is extremely low, and all of the seats in question either met or exceed the standard. Moreover, according to the NHTSA, there is not enough data to support making changes. However, Congresswoman Diane DeGette thinks the companies should focus on the victims, and how many lives have been shattered by the dangerous seats.

Currently, the automakers claim that their cars are safe and are giving Markey and Blumenthal until June 23rd to prove otherwise. The NHTSA and other safety experts said they would provide seating recommendations for the children who are riding in the back seat. However, they have yet to provide this information.
