Audi E-Tron Named Top Safety Pick by IIHS

Baltimore Car Accident Lawyers discuss Audi E-Tron named Top Safety Pick by IIHS. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named an electric car its top safety pick; the first electric battery-operated vehicle that was awarded this honor. Priced at $75,000, the Audi E-Tron can travel just over 200 miles after one charge. Standards for a top safety pick include earning a Good rating in six different types of crash tests. The E-Tron aced these tests and went on to earn a Superior rating for its front crash prevention system.

In this test, the car avoided a crash while traveling at 25 miles per hour but ended up hitting an object while traveling at 12 mph; the vehicle slowed to one mph before the collision. The E-Tron also earned a Good rating for its headlights, the highest rating in this category. The electric car would have still received a top safety pick designation even if it merely received an Acceptable rating for headlights.

Prior Difficulties

This historic rating should boost sales of the E-Tron, which has not done as well as expected in the market. The car’s rollout was set back when Audi’s CEO was arrested for his involvement in a Volkswagen scandal regarding phony emissions testing. Battery shortages caused an additional release date postponement. Once the cars finally launched, several hundred were soon recalled for potential fire risks.

More Luxury Electric Cars Coming Soon

More luxury electric cars have recently been released, while others should become available within a short time. The popularity of these high-end vehicles should enhance the electric car market overall, as more people look for environmentally friendly transportation with safety technology. Jaguar’s I-Pace is now on the road, and the Mercedes-EQC, an SUV, started appearing in dealer showrooms this summer. Porsche is also entering the electric vehicle market with its Taycan, scheduled for release in early fall.
