Liberty Road Safety Project

Liberty Road in Baltimore County is about to experience a major makeover that will reduce the risk of car accidents and make it a more aesthetically pleasing area for residents and motorists. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz announced that $900,000 has been allocated for beautification and safety improvements along Liberty Road as part of the “Walk Smart – Don’t Dart” pedestrian safety outreach campaign. Officials predict that the project will be complete by the end of the year.

Area Improvements

In response to a request from Kamenetz for improvements to Liberty Road, the state provided a five-million grant for projects including Liberty Road. Improvements include new lighting fixtures, thermoplastic crosswalks, and new street lights. Based on the success of the Liberty Road project, the improvements could extend to other portions of the road, including McDonogh Road to Owings Road, and Rolling Road to the Beltway.

In addition to the safety aspect of the project, the new lighting and upgraded crosswalk will reflect the strong sense of community for which Randallstown is known. Construction for the project is already underway, with Colonial-style light fixtures and street lights being installed along the two-mile stretch of Liberty Road from Rolling Road to McDonogh Road. The Executive Director of the Liberty Road Business Association reports that they are extremely pleased with the improvements and look forward to more people patronizing the shops and restaurants along Liberty Road.

While pedestrian crashes have been reported throughout the county, certain areas are particularly problematic, including Liberty Road in Randallstown, York Road in Towson, and Merritt Boulevard in Dundalk. Police and Fire Departments have reported a high incidence of pedestrian accidents near bus stops, which tend to be on busy roads and at or near intersections.

Walk Smart – Don’t Dart

Pedestrians need to be proactive and advocate for their own safety. Pedestrians should keep the following tips in mind to avoid being hit by a car:

• Always use crosswalks, particularly at busy intersections
• Avoid distractions like cell phones and other devices when crossing the street
• Wear brightly colored or reflective clothing at night
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Look both ways before crossing and make eye contact with the driver so you know he or she sees you
