Teen Drivers at Greater Risk of Car Accidents

Getting a driver’s license is a major milestone for a teenager, but one that comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that teens lack the driving experience needed to handle certain situations that arise. This, combined with the fact that teens are more likely to engage in risk-taking behavior, such as speeding, distracted driving, and drinking while under the influence of alcohol, puts them at an increased risk for serious car accidents.

Increased Risk During the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” 

While teen drivers are at an increased risk for car accidents all year, they are at a particular risk during the summer months, also known as the “100 deadliest days of summer.” School is out for the summer, so there are significantly more teen drivers on the road. According to AAA, the average number of fatalities resulting from car accidents involving teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 increases by 15 percent during the summer months. In addition, a AAA study done in collaboration with the University of Iowa found that 60 percent of today’s teen-related car wrecks are caused by distracted driving.

How to Avoid Teen Accidents 

AAA urges parents of teen drivers to talk to their children about the dangers of unsafe driving behaviors. They also encourage parents to create a driving agreement that establishes strict driving rules that the teen must follow, including a penalty and reward system. The Graduated Driver Licensing system (GDL), which helps drivers gain experience by exposing them to low-risk scenarios, is an additional program proven to be effective. As new drivers successfully move through each stage, they are given new privileges.
